Interesting things always have magic powers to please you, although you have to suffer the time they annoy you.
Look back the days my stay in Barcelona, from time to time I really wished I could get out of this big, noisy and crowed trap as soon as possible, full of people, hot stale air inside subway stations, coarse sand beach and terrible traffic signals. Plus that usually I get bored earlier than I start to lose my interest, the splendor of historic religion buildings can not impress me any more. However, however, If there is a reason I wish to visit famous Barcelona again, it exactly is the reason that this city gets famous and crowed.
As a person who gave Barcelona magic power to keep attractive, Gaudi spent most of his life there, correspondingly, his works gather there and it would be great if I had enough time to see the whole evolution of his designs. Unfortunately, I had few time and only visited Sagrada familia and Casa Batllo.
But the good thing is I followed google maps in a totally wrong direction after out of metro station. I couldn’t find where Sagrada familia is in 35 degrees weather. Disappointed, frustrated and almost angry with myself. I started to walk randomly and for the sake of no sense I turned back. What is it? A prehistorical mammoth inside of a group of farm animals — the conflict between disappointed and astonished make that scene of Sagrada familia carved in my head by this way. And finally I can take my time and walk close to it carefully. Happy, curious and full of expectations.
Sagrada familia lying on the ground like taking a short rest. It seems this huge, vivid and strange monster can get up anytime and walk to elsewhere by its heavy and clumsy footsteps. The normal buildings surrounded this big cathedral are peaceful and innocent, they look at countless human beings walk inside mammoth’s mouth.
The erosion and weathering of the skin of Sagrada familia make it looks like already lived for thousands years. The cathedral hall full of fantastic light and shade. Gaudi likes to use nature light. Sunshine pass through colorful glass ceiling and window, put brilliant shadows on the floor, they dance with the sun and rest after sunset. Like people’s life before electric. According to Gaudi’s idea, Sagrada familia is a forest. Sit down quietly and surrounded by big trees, sacred canopy protect fragile Christ on The Cross, I am an atheist, but I wish somewhere really exists a God who can protect our nature. People build temples and cathedrals according to their interpretations of their Gods, architectures influence people’s mind back. Once I stated to look buildings in such a way, I started to see why some architects intend to keep their designs simple but others prefer delicate decoration and lifelike sculptures. The difference is neither colorful or black-white nor wood or stone, but the way architects describe their believes of life and human society. Based on their own idea, they change lifeless materials and tools to different lifelike works. As a ordinary person, I do not have chance to talk with them, the only way to admire them is to admire their works as much as I can.
Gaudi designed Casa Batllo when he was fifty years old. But take a walk inside this magic building. You feel like it is a child’s ocean dream, smart, happy and ready for sailing. Maybe because it’s hardly to find a straight line, I even feel a little bit dizzy when walking from one room to anther. The central well of Casa Batllo totally changed my impression of this kind of place, it’s not cold, dark, boring anymore. The natural light reflected by blue and gray ceramic tiles make the windows and stairs warm and bright. Think about the monks who had to walk on narrow stairs in Sagrada familia, it’s difficult to compare with the people lived in this build.
Gaudi likes to have new ideas and luckily, he is a genius, people like to see how he implement his ideas. And really wish I will go to Barcelona to see other designs soon.
